The Borders Virtual Club sent a rink to the last ever Braehead Invitational Virtual Club Bonspiel. The format of the competition was two 4 end games with the top four rinks going through to the high road and the 5th to 8th going to the low road and the bottom team dropping out.
The Borders won the first game against Braehead and then the second game with a comfortable 10-2 victory against a Lockerbie rink seeing them top the seeding and playing a Dundee rink in the semi final. This proved to be a bit of a grudge match as one of the Dundee players was the son of Andy and brother of Danny. After a few good early shots, Dundee were forced to chase the game and The Borders ended up winning 8-1.
The final was a much closer affair against a strong Forfar rink who won the National Challenge last season who had to draw to the button to get through. The Borders went one up in the first end with hammer then made the Forfar skip continue his good drawing with a draw against 5 to tie things up, another close end saw Borders defending a one shot lead going down the final end, a touch of luck saw Forfar push the game to another draw to the button. The Borders skip lost the toss and was made to throw first, to the surprise of everyone present, he drew half into the four foot which was enough to win the trophy with the Forfar skip leaving his draw short of the rings.
It was a well supported event and as always, a very friendly day of curling.
The Virtual Club is for people who have been curling for under 2 seasons and meet on Saturday mornings at 11:30, if you are interested in coming or know someone who might be please email email@example.com
