Trivia relating to Border Curling!

The oldest existing clubs in the Borders are the Jedburgh and Kelso clubs who were formed in 1790.   Jedburgh was admitted to the RCCC in1845 but Kelso did not join until 1853.

A team of four curlers from the Borders attended the opening of The Scottish Ice Rink, Glasgow on 1st October 1907.   The team was Skip: R H Herbertson, Earlston; Third: Wm Hood, St Boswells; Second: Mr Rodger, Selkirk. Lead: Geo Dun, Galashiels. 


Acording to the 2009 RCCC Annual there are 649 registered curlers in the Border area, 538 in the Border Province and 69 from other clubs including Glendale & St Ronans.   Yester play in the Border Ice Rink so that adds another 21.   The smallest club is Eildon and the largest is Roxburghe.

The Borders have provided 6 RCCC Presidents over the years: 1868/70 The Earl of Minto; 1883/82 The Duke of Roxburghe; 1914/15 Sir Richard Waldie-Griffith; 1920/21,  The Earl Haig; 1923/24 The Earl of Home; 1971/73 W D Wilson & 2007/8 Tommy Hinnigan.   The RCCC Ladies section has also had Border names in the chair, in the form of Marguerite Roberts in 1975; Betty Wilson in 1983 and Joan Forrest in 2004.

The Delegates of the Border Curling Association formed the “Border Province of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club” at a meeting in the Railway Hotel, St Boswells on 21st November 1898.

On 28th January 1899. the first Border Bonspiel was played on the recently constructed reservoir at Bowden Moor by kind permission of the Lunacy Board of Directors, Dingleton.

On 9th January 1960 a dinner was held in the Peebles Hydro to entertain the touring Canadian Curling Team.   The charge to Border Curlers for this dinner was £2.10s
