Trivia relating to Border Curling!
The Sir Richard Waldie-Griffith Challenge Cup is played for every year between the Provinces of Scotland,
but did you know that Sir Richard Waldie Griffith was a Border Curler? He was a member of the Kelso Club as was
his father (George Waldie Griffith) before him. The Waldie Griffith family also funded the school at Ednam village. A team of four curlers from the Borders attended the opening of The Scottish Ice Rink, Glasgow on 1st
October 1907. The team was Skip: R H Herbertson, Earlston; Third: Wm Hood, St Boswells; Second: Mr Rodger, Selkirk.
Lead: Geo Dun, Galashiels. On 28th January 1899. the
first Border Bonspiel was played on the recently constructed reservoir at Bowden Moor by kind permission of the Lunacy Board
of Directors, Dingleton. On 9th January 1960 a dinner
was held in the Peebles Hydro to entertain the touring Canadian Curling Team. The charge to Border
Curlers for this dinner was £2.10s |
