The Henderson Bishop has to be the most prestigious
ladies curling competition held in Scotland,
comparable
to the R.C.C.C. Rink Championships.
Played each year at Ice Rinks across the country
the winning rinks from each ice
rink going on
to represent their home ice rink
at the finals held in February each season
Arthur Henderson Bishop
was the son of
the founder of Cooper & Co. wholesale grocers
and moved to Thorntonhall in 1904 when he bought the
Hall.
He laid out extensive gardens and a floodlit curling rink,
which
was powered by his own plant.
A.H.Bishop first appears in the minutes of
Haremyres Curling Club in 1904
when
he paid ten shillings as an occasional
member of the Haremyres Curling Club.
On the 31st December 1906
a Meeting
of Directors was held on the Ice
on the Haremyres Curling Pond
at which Mr A.H.Bishop was appointed a Skip.
The draw
for the first round in the Punchbowl
was then made and played out.
The second round took place on 4th January 1907
Final
on 1st February 1907 when John Hamilton
triumphed over B. Cramm 21shots to 15.
In 1930 he was elected Honorary President
of the club
which office he held untill 1954.
